The thing I feared the most has happened to me. –Job
A snake convention!
“If I see one more snake I’m heading home! It’s like a snake convention out here,” the hiker said.”
A group of us were running on dirt trails, and we came upon a man who said he was terrified of snakes. And he’d seen a bunch of them.
But my friends and I hadn’t seen even one snake that whole day.
You attract what you fear
You may have heard about the “Law of Attraction.” This law says what you attract into your life what you think about. So if you’re walking in the woods thinking about being afraid of snakes–you’ll see snakes.
I know that my friend, the skeptic, will say, “Prove it.”
The Law of Attraction isn’t hard-core science. But there are studies showing that this law is not fantasy and superstition either.
Worry and fear feel natural
You don’t have to work hard to to worry and think about what you’re afraid of. Negative thoughts come easy. And I’ve found that when I expect the worst I usually get it. What you fear will come to you eventually.
You can choose what you think about
If you’re not paying attention, your brain goes on auto-pilot. And your thoughts run the same playlist of worry and fear over and over. And you feel trapped. You feel like your worry and fearful thoughts are “just who I am.”
But you are the thinker of your thoughts. You choose what you think. But you have to pay attention to what you’re thinking.
Can you attract business failure?
You’ve heard the statistics. The odds of success in a startup business are 50/50 in five years–no better than a coin flip.
A good way to attract failure to your business and your life is to live in the fear and worry of “WHAT IF?”.
And if you’re dreaming about being an entrepreneur, fear will keep you from ever starting a business.
3 steps to get control of what you think
- Pay attention to your harmful thought patterns.
- Say to yourself: “I’m not controlled by my thoughts. I am the thinker of my thoughts.”
- Move your attention to thoughts that are helpful and healthy.
Repeat as needed.
Think and Grow Rich
Napoleon Hill stresses this point over and over in Think and Grow Rich: the greatest gift God gave us is the power to choose what we think. Of course, you need more than positive thinking to prosper. You’ve got to do the work if you want any kind of success.
But doing business or living life with constant fear and worry is like driving a car with the parking brake on. Choose what you think about! You’ll see and feel the difference.
