You don’t have what you want because you don’t ask for it. –quoted from the Bible
Yes, I ripped this Bible quote completely out of its context. I’m going to make about half the Christians here mad at me anyway, so I might as well do it from the start.
Comfort or character?
I grew up thinking God only gives you good stuff every so often as a reward for being a good Christian. I had to be thankful for every blessing, large or small, and be careful not to expect too much.
God’s will for me was to be spiritual. And having too much comfort and fun in this life could make me un-spiritual. “God is concerned about your character, not your comfort.” This was the mantra I believed.
The Law of Attraction — New Age isn’t new
The Law of Attraction says you attract the things you think about, talk about and have strong feelings about. (Proof of this law in the Bible too.) My previous post talked about how you attract the things you’re afraid of into your life. The New Age people call this “manifesting.” In other words, your thoughts (good or bad) create real things that show up in your life. Knowing how to control what you think about will let you avoid the bad and attract the good.
The claims of the New Age people aren’t new. Christians have had access to these truths for centuries. But when you believe God is a hard-assed task-master, you never dare to ask for what you really want.
Ask for what you want!
My warped ideas about God kept me from even knowing what I really wanted. I believed that my wants and desires should be in third place. Here’s what I was taught in church:
You put . . .
And, look at that! You have JOY!
Except I didn’t have joy. I felt guilty because I wanted more money and success in my business.
Discovering God’s good side
I’m learning about God’s good side and that he’s always in a good mood. And asking for what I want isn’t wrong! My word for this year (2018) is “ask.” I’m asking for some mind-blowing stuff! And I don’t feel guilty! I may not get everything I ask for, but I won’t let that stop me. I’m seeing results too.
Manifesting by accident
Here’s an example of an answer we got:
Brenda, my wife, saw a print of a tree while we were working in a client’s house. She said, “That’s a perfect picture for our home. The colors are exactly what we need.” She used her phone to post the image on Facebook to ask her friends if anyone knew where to buy this print. But we went on with our day, and the perfect picture of the tree slipped to the back of her mind.
A few days later we went to the Plaza Art Show. It’s a big event in Kansas City. As we strolled by the booths, she saw the print of that same tree for sale. We met the photographer and heard the story of how he took the photo. We haven’t yet decided whether to buy a production copy or a custom sized print. But Brenda’s request to find the print for sale was answered in a huge way!
God’s in a good mood!
So here’s what I’m learning to do:
Ask for what you want. Think about and talk about the good things you want to attract into your life. Remember, the greatest gift God gave you is the power to choose the thoughts you think.
In business and in life you have to ask for what you want. Keep asking! You’ll be amazed at what you get.
