Great conversations with runners and others who have an ultramarathon mindset.

  • Bringing the Fun – Todd Chandler

If you’re not having fun, you might be doing it wrong!

Todd Chandler always adds a dash of fun to almost everything he does. Sure, he’s a strong runner with a bag full of race medals. And whether you talk to him in person, or see something he’s posted on social media, his sense of humor comes through.

This summer he had to pause his training to recover from an injury. So he made a video and infographic about how to be successful at Ultra-Couching.

Here is the link to Todd’s Ultra-Couching video: https://youtu.be/Se1SGqHr57w

  • Cindy Rieckhoff

    Cindy Rieckhoff has a reputation . . . a good one . . . in the trail running community.

I first heard about her as I was pacing Abby (Kathryn Ivey) through the night at the Outlaw 100. Abby told me about how Cindy custom build a small camping trailer for all the ultramarathons she traveled to.

Later, the next morning, I saw Cindy’s jeep and camper, but I didn’t have a chance to meet her.

But I began following her on Facebook and I’ve enjoyed seeing her adventures in words and pictures. I hope one day to be able to run trails with her in real life, but don’t want to wait. I’m excited to hear her stories as we have a virtual “trail talk.”

  • Ila Allen

Ila Allen is a trail runner who has an unstoppable mindset. She keeps training and pushing to conquer big challenges.

If you are a member of any Facebook running groups, you probably have seen Ila Allen. She’s an ultra runner and trail runner, and she runs with her Crack of Dawn Crew, making regular deposits in her account at the “Bank of Run.”

She is not one to make excuses for not running. She runs in the heat, the rain, snow, and the freezing cold. And she has her sites set on running more races and looking for new challenges.

  • Running ALL the Races – Jason Silvers

Jason Silvers has an unconventional approach to training for all the races he enters. And he tries to run ALL the races – almost every weekend.

This week I talk with my friend, Jason Silvers. He is a runner and vlogger with a long list of races under his belt.

He runs races almost ever weekend througout the year and documents them on his YouTube channel, “The Year I Got the Runs.”

When you see his videos, you can instantly see that Jason has fun while he’s running. Making connections with people and being alert for video opportunities keeps him focused through the miles of his races.

I found out a fact about Jason I didn’t know. He has an unconventional approach to training. But I’ll let you discover that secret for yourself as you listen.

  • Consciously Healthy with Health Coach, Erin Perrigo

Taking care of your health is more than just diet and exercise.

Yes, these are important. But your mindset plays a bigger role than most of us realize.

Erin Perrigo is a health coach who helps her clients be consciously healthy. That is, she helps her clients approach health with a conscious intention to be emotionally healthy in order to have the best physical health possible.

Erin’s perspective came from working through the pain and trauma her daughter suffered as a baby and the resulting health struggles that came as a result.

Her insights for optimum health are spot-on for everyone. But for us ultra runners, the wisdom she shares will help us keep doing the kind of long distances we love.

  • Chi Running – Lisa Pozzoni

Some people say you will get injured if you run long enough. But it is possible to run injury free. ChiRunning is a form that has helped scores of runners keep going for the long haul.

If you run trails with me, I’ll probably start talking about how ChiRunning helped me run ultramarathons without getting the kind of injuries I hear most runners talking about: shin splints, sore knees, hip problems.

Lisa Pozzoni is a master ChiRunning instructor, joins me tonight to talk about what ChiRunning is all about and what it can do for you as a runner.

  • Living an Adventure – Brian Hoover

What would it be like to take off on a life of adventure? Brian Hoover did just that. From ultra running to hiking the PCT to living the van life and kayaking the entire Mississippi river.

Brian Hoover started running, and it changed his life.

Like most of us runners, he started gradually, running 5Ks first then longer races. A friend introduced him to trail races and ultramarthon distances. Then he was hooked.

Racing led him to start his own business providing chip timing for racing events in the region. And, as the business grew, it gave him the freedom to work from anywhere, so he downsized to live in a van and pursue outdoor adventures.

In 2019, he set off to hike the Pacific Crest Trail, from Mexico to Canada. The unusual amount of snow forced him to skip the High Sierra section of the trail.

It’s easy to tell ourselves that we’ll chase these kinds of adventures once “the time is right.” But that usually ends up with us never getting around to going and doing and living the life we dream of.

This year (2020) he is off on another adventure, to kayak the length of the Mississsippi.

  • Pacing, Crewing, & Running 100 Miles – Jackie Beth McCartney

When it comes to crewing and pacing, Jackie Beth is the kind of person you want on your team. This episode took an unexpected turn at the end. You never know what trail runners will end up talking about.

I met Jackie Beth when we both volunteered to pace Abby (Kathryn Ivey) in her run at the Outlaw 100. (Ep. 3)

Neither of us knew Abby before the race, nor did we know each other.

But we swapped running stories and it didn’t take long before we felt like we’d known each other for a long time.

Jackie doesn’t limit herself to just one sport. But she’s and accomplished ultra runner, running in her own races and pacing and crewing other runners.

Trail conversations sometimes meander just like the trails we run. This conversation is no different. We talk about crewing and pacing and running at night and snakes, and that’s just the start. There’s a little bit of everything in this conversation.
